Foppa’s Moped

SWEDEN. Peter “Foppa” Forsberg’s  ( one of the worlds greatest hockey player’s ) Yamaha FS1 was carefully restored in a cold storage room in Långsele. The owner Thomas Bergström has been smart enough not to paint it or improve it unnecessarily. Untouched patina is the name of the game. by Lars Krantz

Thomas Bergström in Långsele drives trains.  On weekdays, he runs freight train that is over half a kilometer long and weighs 2,500 tons. In his spare time he fiddles with small mopeds.

– I do not know, it just has become so, he says

foppa10Hockey legend and superstar Peter “Foppa” Forsberg moped is not the first he restored and he has several at once. He shows a dejected and gloomy frame but everything in a shed.
-Foppas Moped was complete but in worse condition than this when I bought it, he says.

foppa8The mop was not in full from the family of Forsberg in Örnsköldsvik. It has made a trip. Thomas has a friend in Sundsvall who has three boys. Friend’s mom was friends with Foppa ‘s mom so when Sundsvall family needed a scooter to the eldest son he received the moped.

The moped was then inherited by all three sons. Eventually  it died. Mate saw by now desirous to Thomas toxic VW 1303S with Wolfracefäljar.

foppa_small– You can have my Volvo 740 and a moped for the beetle, Foppa and his brother has been riding on it, he said one day to Thomas Bergström in Långsele.

So it went. The lifeless Yamaha was in a shed in Sundsvall and was presented with locked wheels. The Volvo did Thomas prepare for his daughter and could then work with the moped?

It’s a 1977 or 1978: a, says Thomas, thus swaying slightly on the model year.
– Yet his specialty is just Yamaha.

Foppa’s moped needed everything. Thomas took it apart completely and began to take notes of what needs to be purchased new, what could be cleaned up and what needs to be painted. The goal was set from the beginning. This scooter would be restored with care, all to keep the original.

The engine was devided and all bearings and seals and stuff  were replaced.

-At the same time it was “upgraded” to a little more power. With cylinder on 60cc and Bing 19 is easier to get up the hills, says Thomas.

Front and rear fenders could not recovered. I had to get new ones. The muffler was also beyond redemption so it was replaced with a new one. It has also new tires and tubes,  of course, as well as new support and new foot pegs. The lights were also wrecked but where Thomas has retained the original cover, and just changed the front part.

I have kept everything that was possible and just refurbished the rest, says Thomas, who thank Norscand Soderhamn for all your help with parts.

Chain, sprocket and chain guard is also new, but the swing is unpainted. Engine covers are however painted. He rolls it out in the sun and puts the key in the ignition. Everything feels fresh. 12450 km has it at least. Thomas does not know if the meter is changed or if the wire has been broken at some time during the thirty years the cultivated.

And now is the moped with the most unusual history  for sale, we asked?
-Jepp, I have other mopeds waiting and need the money for them, says Thomas, adding:

– I do not care so much as it was Peter Forsberg’s. Foppa is my idol and will remain so. I do not have to have his moped for it.
