Forget magnets and special instruments. In your Iphone you have the perfect tool to check bondo thickness under the paint surface.
Car painters can see how thick layer of paint there is on a car. They stand squinting at the door edges and radious and says Greek as “very thick” and “chicken wire”.
“Thick paint” i thought was great but it turned out wrong as I was told. Another thing is knowing how much bondo there is under the paint on a great looking car you are in a position to buy.
Some have a magnet. The longer the distance to the underlying plate, the smaller the attraction of the magnet. Also depends on how strong magnet you have. There are magnets that can lift a car if you put it on the roof.
A new opportunity to “look under the surface” is in your own smartphone if you have a so-called IAM. Inclination Angle Meassurement. It gives you a magnestostatisk calculation in degrees to the horizontal so you can see bondo thickness
In the Iphone it’s hidden “behind the compass”.
Scroll up the compass and draw with your finger over it. This takes you to the IAM.
Then hold the smartphones short side against the body part you want to explore and tilt it upwards or downwards at the rear edge so that the two rings coincide. When the rings coincide , and the screen turns red, you have the relationship to the plate in degrees. 1 degree is 1000 µM ( Micrometre. )
2 micrometre i.e. only the paint, no bondo.
