The Georgia couple was missing since driving across the state to check out a classic car advertised on Craigslist.

Telfair County Sheriff Chris Steverson said deputies said 28-year-old Ronnie Adrian “Jay” Towns turned himself in late Monday morning.  He is charged with giving false statements and criminal attempt to commit theft by deception.  He hasn’t been charged in connection to the couple’s disappearance.

Investigators said the phone number that Bud Runion, 69, and his 66-year-old wife, June, used to reach Towns was traced back to a disposable cellphone.

Steverson said Towns was interviewed and information he provided didn’t match what investigators know of the case, which led to the charges.

The Runions, who are from Marietta, drove about three hours to McRae, Georgia, on Thursday to meet someone who responded to Bud Runion’s ad seeking a 1966 Mustang.

Family members became concerned when the couple didn’t come back or answer calls, so they filed a missing persons report.

A post on the Find Bud & June Runion Facebook page said they were driving a 2003 champagne color GMC Envoy.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Telfair County Sheriff’s Office at 229-868-6621.
