1970 Dodge Charger 6.4 Hemi

Paul Olav Lyngstads Charger has 470 direct injected horsepowers . Idling is little kitten. Full throttle is Godzilla who sat on a thumbtack. All nicely packaged in a low octane ride at  22 MPG.    by Krantz

-Take care says Paul Olav Lyngstad and leaves me. The magic of the taillights disappear and I’m more alone now than before we met. Much more.
I did not know I missed a 1970 Dodge Charger 6.4 Hemi in my entire life.
Left on the gravel is  gasoline smell and separation anxiety.
-Darn Norwegians.

Fourteen years it has taken. The maiden tripp went to the Classic Car Week and Worldkustoms camera. Honoring.

Let’s  go for a ride readers.
The Charger sleep walks out of Rattvik. Leisurely, still and silently purring . The windows are closed and it is quiet and rattle-free. Paul Olav turn onto the main road. The engine is warm.

charger18

The tach is at 1800 revs when Paul Olav wakes up the engine by tapping the accelerator into  the firewall. That the  6.4  Hemi hears . . .

charger9

Ohh mommy !!!, it downshifts,  the rear wheels takes of helplessly, then upshift, and the wheels continue to spin then it  gears up again and pulls phenomenally continuing with raised front.

We catch up everybody along the road, including the ones who started this morning. Mr. Lyngstad release the gas, the Hemi fall asleep again and we’re purring again this time in highway speed with the unforgettable torque in our backs.

Imported 2001charger001

The car was imported in 2001. It was a 440-car that arrived in the city Lyngstad on the west coast of Norway. (Yes, his name is the same as the place). It was not a cream puff though. It oh my god ….

Charger018needed a new interior design to begin with and the parts of the body were gee !!! charger043. . .  gone after rust removal. Like  Norway rescues a Charger that is.charger051

The powertrain on the other hand, Oh no … not that either.

Charger0b48Everything was over hauled. The years went by. Finally, after four years, in 2005 Paul Olav painted it and installed the new vinyl roof.

THe 440 motor kicked on well. The Charger  was entirely finished … or not?

Now the car owner had new ideas. The modern 5.7 liter Hemin with direct injection had been followed by an awesome 6.1-liter Hemi. Since recently, there were also a colossal 6.4-liter Hemi Chrysler.

charger2

The 440 engine sitting there since the renovation had been provided with sixpack and always wanted to have  13 MPG  to go to duty. The car as a whole had been really nice updated with the original power windows, front disc brakes and larger, eleven inch rear drums, but it would have been fun with a Hemi. At the same time a  neighbor wanted to buy the 440 .charger10

Paul Olav found a “new” 6.4 Hemi that sat in a 2012 Chrysler 300 in the US, and yes, a ship came laden with the gun. The neighbor took the 440 and the 727 tranny and now it was well “just to shovel in the Hemi”, big Norway?

Fit well though not all at once?
The original transmission was just to forget. It is a NAG1 from Mercedes. The tranny is talking to the computer, which is common but it also speaks to the ABS and a Charger from 1970 has the  ABS in the driver’s foot.

The transmission from 2003, has no ABS and also have socket for the starter on the left side as opposed to 6.4 which has the starter on the right side.

Furthermore the headers fit  directly from the older 5.7 and 6.1 liter Hemi engines

charger6

I think I put in and took out the engine with tranny 15 times, says Paul Olav who instantly noticed that the sump collided with  the front suspension beam and the transmission was to wide for the floor. The solution was an oil pan from a 5.7 to 6.1 Hemimotor and bumped out  transmission tunnel.

charger7

And then it was just bolt on ?

Well, nope.

After the inner fenders had been a little modified I  could finally angle it down but now it did not fit the firewall instead.

A 5.7  and 6.1: a fits but the  6.4  has a “small box” at the rear of the intake manifold that stands out in an annoying way.

charger8

Paul Olav chose to let the firewall be untouched and mounted the engine 2 cm further in the engine compartment instead. The valve covers are no valve covers. The click off easily and under is  an ignition coil for each cylinder. Finally, would the propeller shaft fit and then it happened!  The Yoke to the 1970 727-transmission fitted right in !! Now that’s backward compatibility. The shaft had to be shortened one inch, that was all.

charger17

The Charger had a center console installed earlier from 1971 Challenger  and now the question was how the gear lever would work against this new machine, but it also fitted virtually directly. Boom and the Charger had  six gears. (Five gears plus lockup)

The lamp is from a modern Chrysler car and indicates that the line lock is enabled.

8 3/4 inch rear axle with larger brakes and 3.23: 1, with positraction  were left untouched.

The new steering pump was too efficient for the old steering box so  a relief valve was inserted.

An electric pump for the fuel was mounted at the tank.

The computer was placed under the dashboard, the harness connections were gently  connected  and it was time to fill the oils and water.

From  this point, it may take a month before you can start the car. It is not uncommon for a data manager to be called in. Paul Olav wiped his hands on his jeans, sat in the car, pressed the old original accelerator pedal now working on the digital gas unit from the Chrysler 300.

It felt unreal but it was time for test start. He turned the key.

He let the fuel pump run for a while and then tried to start. The Dodge starter was heard for the first time and the Hemi fired up right away! It shooked for a moment, reved up , then came down to an even and smooth idle and has not made a hick up once since then.

charger3

Paul Olav Lyngstad from Lyngstad had all of a sudden a Charger 1970 with a  6.4 Hemi rumbling in his garage

charger13

Although gasoline consumption do not play the role of hobby cars such as these it may be fun to know.

– I had hoped for  18 MPG but the computer says  22 MPG mixed driving notifies the car painter and car-builder with the car you did not know you missed.

  1. Hi just about to do the same conversion into a 1970 dodge charger but I’m using the 5.7 out of a 300 c hope it all goes well .How much floor pan do you have to hammer in to fit the 5 speed auto in and do you use the same computer thanks I’m in Australia so informing her is limited

    1. Yes there is a lot of work. Check my Facebook page “6.4 Hemi” where you will find pictures. And “G3 Hemi Swap” much to see there. Wir, Komputer and everything else I bought from http://www.modernmusclextreme.com. Request a quote with them. Good luck.

  2. I’m doing much the same with my 68 Dodge Charger. Except I’m removing the 5.7 Hemi and the 545RFE transmission and installing a 2018 SRT 6.4 Hemi and it’s 8 speed in its place!
Should be runnning and driving soon!
I’m using RMS Alterkation for the K-frame and suspension along with their Street Lynx rear setup.
The only changes I’m making is the shifter to fit my console!
