It was the color that glued us to the car. Oops, the interior was also fat, then we looked under it. . .by Krantz
Chevrolet Nova has no frame
The car that came in 1962 was designed from scratch without glancing at other Chevy models.
They looked more at the Ford Falcon and wanted to meet the demand of small cars.
Jim Meyer Racing calls Chevrolet’s solution “the most peculiar” of the brand’s subframe constructions.
For trips to the mall in 1963 it worked enough, but today Nova buyers have something else in sight.
Chevrolet managed to make a small, light weight Chevy with attractive appearance. Lines and proportions are excellent. The Nova is a cool car simply and gets quickly more fun at the red lights with a snappy mill under the hood.
The thing with a powerful engine, however, makes problems with the original stripped-down framework. When Worldkustom looked under neath it was decided. Get the camera! Rack and pinion, performance subframe, coilovers.
Chris Alston’s a manufacturer that makes bolt on frame kit for Chevrolet Nova and that’s whats on this car belonging to George Jung in Naples Florida.
Mr. Jung has the car in for service at Barr’s performance in the same city.
Barr’s Performance has built, serviced and harbored cars since 1994. Snowbirds who want a supercharged Corvette for fun can rent a parking place inside at Barr’s when they leave the state and when they return pick it up newly serviced, modified according to customer requirements and ready to meet the sunshine.
Father and son Jim and Jeff Barr takes care of your car at all times, have own cars of course and is constantly building cars for customers. Jeff moves the Nova outside so we can shoot it but we do not want to picture it there , among a lot of other cars.
After a quick phone call to the owner, and we set off.
-These Americans, always quick and service minded. Jeff helps us all the way, and can also tell us about the car.
We have not built this, he hastens to say, but we tune it for the customer.
The engine block is from Dart. A smallblock that provides full 406 cubic inches. The heads are Dart Pro 1 aluminum with improved flow and lower weight.
The reinforced frame goes up in the engine compartment.
A Quick Fuel carburetor feeds the engine when it wants to breathe fully and let the car stretch out on the hot asphalt where alligators are dozing on the shoulder.
New pulley kit from March Performance. Barr’s has updated the Nove quite a lot .
Shifting gears George Jung does with a TH 700 tranny that’s modified for more distinct shifting. Finally, the rear axle which has 3.73: 1 gear ratio and is coming from Ford. Yepp it’s a nine inch.
The most of the car’s fiberglass and the paint is called Pearl Fine Yellow.
-How did it do then?
-Dunno!
As the professional service man Jeff is he did not let him be stressed by the foreign motor head magazine.
-Roaring along the roads is for the owner to decide where and when.
– But it sounded good.
