Bjorn Borg drives without a helmet

SWEDEN. It’s moped expo in Harnosand with influences from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Our fifteenth birthday turned magical the 23th of May 1952 when a change in the law allowed us to enter the open road the day we turn 15. The proposition was meant to ease the isolation for us country-bound hicks but became the smoking gun for a steaming teenage culture. By Lars Krantz. Translation Ellen Kay Krantz.

Let’s put the pedal to the metal, was the name of the exhibit in the county museum in Harnosand. The swoosh of a forest, the tweet from a bird and the sound from a lonely moped riding through the countryside streamed through the hidden speakers. Next to a mailbox and an inviting front porch swing two teenagers had left their mopeds.

When mom rings the dinner bell  it’s time for a break. On the wall a dictionary over the new language. Pincher, leveler and five-and-a- half.

– This exhibit has been differently received, says Marta Molin at the county museum. People arrive and take a load off. They take a seat, relaxes, leaf through some magazines and “just hang.” One man revisits a few times a week.

Bjorn Borg with the racket on the luggage carrier without helmet ready to take off. A time to remember.

Mopeds from floor to ceiling. In collaboration with Njurunda Classic Moped and Club Raketa among others the exiting age characterized by hormones running wild and open minds are reflected in the exhibit. When the world was your oyster, nothing could stop you and the entire world was at your feet. The message of this exhibit is very differently delivered than in traditional exhibits.

I wish for a… a… Many returned just to sit and watch. Left top row: Bicycle with attachable motor Victoria 1952, bike with attachable motor Lohmann diesel 1952, Crescent 2000 1959-1960. Right top row: NSU Quickly 1958, “Pampers bike” Husqvarna Novolette Sport 1958 and Zundapp KS50 1971 with a motor from 1958.

A transistor shelf in the garage was a luxury few could enjoy.

The bikes are presented in a gigantic show case from floor to ceiling. You suddenly turn twelve all over again when the fantasies of the bikes overhaul your mind. Lilian Gilmark is responsible for the artistic parts.
– Very well visited, says Marta Molin who has her very own Novelette in the show. In connection to the moped exhibit in August a rally was held with hot dogs and Bosco milk as driver nutrition. Later on the national archive department in Harnosand had a representative, Iréne Nilsson, who opened the data base, were enthusiast could trace vehicles by frame-, motor- and registration number.

Vackert så det värker. Mobylette AV 33, 1953.

Pure project. Made for a cool coffee run by Lars Aldemo. A four-geared Zundapp motor that runs like the wind according to Lars but what about the frame? -Yeah, take a guess, says Lars.

There’s no end to the possibilities. A miniature of the High Coast Bridge lined the entire room.

Forever young with a roll bar and highly positioned steering. – You do remember the Puch Dakota and its tank mat that was launched in 1972, here, side by side with the killer with double cradle frame, Crescent E-type. Pinched MC:s which, in the hands of young men, opened up for many nightly adventures at a speed of 40 exciting mph.

Packmoppen.

The flatbed moped. If you had one of these, you almost had a car. Perfect for skids on the ice rink when no one saw.

Maybe this is the way we first got in contact with it. A wobbly and shaky premiere on a driveway, naturally supported by soft grass and compact bushes.

Linda Lindholm 10 years and Alicia Wikström 11 years took to the steering wheel and went for a ride on a butch Suzuki from the 80’s.

Waow!

Untouchable. On the top shelf, the moped chopper “Eagle” from 1956. With a raked front fork it runs whilst three-geared, fan cooled, NSU rotary cultivator motor with 3 horses. A low-budget project from Bjorn Aberg. Wow!

    Fint reportage, mycket bra skrivet.
