SWEDEN. Since you will be reading this twice I have been extra careful with the data and results. With the chip from Enghs Motor in Sundsvall, Sweden you get the feeling of a giant motor in that front, exactly like when you drilled the plug on your moped. by Lars Krantz. Translation Ellen Kay Krantz.
Stefan Engh on Enghs Motor in Sundsbruk is world leading. This is the story about how to get that high power performance without opening the hood. The result is borderline unbelievable. Is this really possible? You will read this again and again; therefore we are careful and precise with our measurements and statements. Everything started with an ad on Blocket. Enghs Motor had an ad out for a chip tuning on Chevrolet 6,5 turbo diesel for 487 $ with excellent high-performance results. Since Engs Motor is just a half an hour away Worldkustom paid a visit in order to talk to the owner. It turned out he has developed a bundle of digital solutions.
Stefan went on paternity leave in the end of 2005. The Camaro was sold and a more family appropriate car, a Suburban diesel from 1995, was purchased. Of course, the fact that the Camaro had higher performance than the Suburban was noticed by Stefan who earlier had worked with his laptop hooked up to the Camaro. He found the electric control unit on his Suburban but nothing worked. While heating up the formula he browsed the net for solutions.
Results: Nada. Nothing. Everything out there was solutions for Camaro and Corvette and not as much as a kilobyte of information about a diesel. A couple of weeks later, when the baby had been burped and was napping the system developer Stefan hooked up an used GM shop computer he had bought cheap to the electric control unit of the Suburban on the work bench in the garage. He then hooked up his own laptop with various homemade cords.
– I went sniffing for the traffic between them both, Stefan says.
As he started observing the traffic he eventually got the hang of the logic behind the GM coding for the diesel chip box he soon found similarities with Camaro. Managed to crack the system and could start programming a new system in Windows. This is where he by his coding is world leading. No man on Earth has ever done this before.
Want to talk to your diesel car? On the Engs motor website there is software for free downloading and Stefan has developed a cable between your PC and the chip box on the car. With the software you are able to diagnose and format errors.
Stefan has sold over 500 premium licenses for private use and commercial shops all over the world that can show pump byte at home in your drive way where you can trig the start cycle and learning function by yourself just like in a GM shop.
– The unique, ground breaking work I have done only reach models between 1994 and 1995, he says carefully and add; but of course I can tune all later diesel cars as well but GM uses updated systems which I created solutions for, but I’m far from the only one using them.
The baby grew and got to go on ride-alongs and countless test rides. You can’t just log in, change settings and press “save” I’m afraid.
For every changed setting and tuning a new chip has to be burnt and installed in the chip box (Electric control unit) placed behind the glove compartment. It’s an easy game but developing the perfect chip takes time and lots of small adjustments. Lots of chips were made before Stefan was satisfied with the end result and it is that exact chip made “Stefan style” that knocks the plug in your diesel 6,5 out of the park.
– In development I have taken both performance and sustainability into consideration, he says.
– The car should behave as usual with just as long run time as usual and also be able to deliver when necessary. He underlines the difference to miracle boxes that attaches to the original box.
– The miracle box tricks the electric control unit in adding a couple, or three steps on the original sensor signals. Thus the electric control unit doesn’t know what happens and receives manipulated signals that it tries to answer too.
Not nearly as good as talking straight to the GM chip box and program the thing from ground level so that all variables stay on play, he says.
From tired oil-fired boiler to raw-strength power big block in 15 minutes.
The reporter has a GMC 6,5 turbo diesel 4WD without EGR from 1994, mileage 13.0000. The exhaust is straight as rain and a sport air filter is on place.
It’s one of those low-flow cars in everyday use, passing other cars or trucks are a mission. Me and my son repeatidly timed 0-60 mph starts. We started in drive and put the pedal to the metal. Result 0-60 mph in 17,0 16,8 17,2 and 17,0 seconds. It roamed in first- and second gear but when the third gear lockup activated the power dropped and I found myself bored, tapping my fingertips on the steering wheel, waiting for it to reach 60.
Stefan un-clicked the chip box behind the glove compartment, opened it, pulled out the chip and replaced it with his own. It was all done in 15 minutes and we never even opened the hood.
– Test driving time, he said and asked if he could come with.
The result made the 50-year-old behind the wheel turn into 15. This wasn’t a barely noticeable increase in speed and power, a subtle change in performance. This was a knockout, an euphoric driving experience, a true hamana-hamana racecar moment. It felt 500 lbs lighter, had an immediate response to the gas, raved through all speeds and felt like raw muscle from the get go. Like a big block! It didn’t crack and pop and make noise, it wasn’t uneasy or overextended. It behaved just like usual until I touched the gas.
With one extra person in the front seat where Stefan constantly had his eye on the rearview mirror, checking the color of the exhaust the truck sent us to 60 mph in just 10,4 10,6 9,6 and 9,5 seconds !!! That’s crazy. His chip chipped off seven seconds! Why hasn’t he got a Nobel Prize yet?
– Smoke looks good, neither to much nor to little, he said calmly while I excitingly shouted words of moped slang and superlatives I haven’t used in 35 years. The chip costs 483 $ and reduces gas consumption (if you can resist to do burn-outs.)
Bot how freakin’ much freakin’ horsepower does it add, I asked?
– Dunno, Stefan said calmly. Haven’t got a dyno.
Fantastiskt resultat!
Yeah, that was unbelievable and still fun everytime i drive it.
Lägre bensinförbrukning…………0 eller.
Jag kollade aldrig. Sorry.
– Kändes som 1,3 – 1,4 både före och efter.
